Long before Radio began playing hit records in the 1950s, live Drama was a staple of American Radio Broadcasts. One of the greatest radio dramas of all-time aired on the evening of October 30,1938 on WABC in New York City and throughout the United States on the Columbia Broadcasting System's coast-to-coast network. The Mercury Theater program broadcast a dramatization of H.G. Wells' fantasy "The War of the Worlds".

The broadcast led thousands of radio listeners to believe interplanetary conflict had started with invading Martians spreading wide death and destruction in New York City. Radio listeners throughout New York fled their homes while tens of thousands across America called police, newspapers and radio stations seeking acceptable protective measures against the raids. A score of adults even required medical treatment for sheer hysteria.

In today's instantaneous information society with Internet, mobile phones, Blackberry's, and 24 hour news channels at our disposal, Radio will never again be able to pull off another War of the Worlds. Back in 1938 the news of the day was delivered via the radio and newspaper. But today radio can make far better use of one our mediums greatest and most underutilized assets "Theater of the Mind".

"The grandest theater in the world cannot match the one between our ears. Radio provides the players and the plot, the mind supplies the rest." 1

Sure many stations pull off some very clever stunts on April Fools Day, but we are not talking about annual radio pranks. We are recommending incorporating "Theater of the Mind" tactics into all aspects of your programming on a daily basis.

Radio is still the only electronic medium than can captivate imaginations be creating vivid pictures in listeners minds. Television and movies are primarily visual. You watch, passively. You are a spectator. But radio, well, you actively listen and the experience is more akin to reading a book. Your mind interprets, translates, and creates. You are a participant.

So the next time you are writing a promo, coaching your talent or creating a promotion, choose your words carefully. Paint the picture and capture their imaginations through Theater of the Mind.
